He is ocol by tribe, his father is a teacher of Gulu mission center and his mother was a composer and singer of ocol`s songs. a long poem Okot p`betek dealing with the tribulations of a rural African wife whose husband has taken up urban life and wishes everything to be westernized . Okot got his education from Gulu high school, kings college Budo (Uganda) government training college(teaching), Bristol university education diploma. A songs of Lawino was initially written in Akoli, one of the Luo dialect in northern Uganda in 1971.
